Van Boening Takes 10-Ball Division in Reno

Player of the Year Shane Van Boening captured the U.S. Bar Table 10-Ball division late Wednesday night as the event slid from 10-ball to 9-ball action. Wednesday was the third day of play of the event, which is hosted by the Sands Regency in Reno and features 10-ball, 9-ball, and 8-ball divisions.

As the day began, Van Boening and Edwin Montal were already in the hot seat match, and after Van Boening defeated Montal all eyes turned to the one-loss side. Tuesday night brought the top 16 to only 4 for the final day, and in the final match some great match-ups were offered up. Gabe Owen survived his mid-event defeat to eliminate Glenn Atwell and then Scott Frost to reach the quarterfinals, while Rodolfo Luat ousted Tyler Edey and Adam Behnke to reach the final day. It was there that Luat continued his surge, knocking out Owen but then falling to Montal, who had Van Boening in his thoughts the whole time. After breaking for most of the day for the initial 9-ball rounds, the 10-ball finals brought Montal and Van Boening back for a rematch of the hot seat match. Once again, Van Boening was in charge the whole time and took the match 7-5 to win the 10-ball division.

With 10-ball concluding, Wednesday brought a 111-player field of 9-ball competitors into the tournament room, where they will play from Wednesday through Friday in the event’s second of three divisions.  The early shocker could not have been more surprising as Larry Wilson defeated Gabe Owen and then sent Van Boening to follow in the next round.

Action in the 9-ball division will continue through 11 p.m. local time when the final two players will get a break for the night and return for the final on Friday. Also, Friday will start the 8-ball action to complete the trio of events and will run through Sunday evening.

1st Shane Van Boening $4250
2nd Edwin Montal $2650
3rd Rodolfo Luat $1600
4th Gabe Owen $900
5th Adam Behnke $650
Scott Frost
7th Tyler Edey $450
Glenn Atwell
