I'm confused. I didn't think that women were allowed to play in the U.S. Open, but I saw Anna Kostanian's name. What's up?

This is a good question. A female playing in the Open goes against everything I have previously read about this.
I was under the understanding that Barry had an agreement with the WPBA which didn't allow women in the Open.

"We posted the players list earlier today and the information in the link above was harvested from this article: http://www.billiardclub.net/showarti...?articleID=124

Anna Kostanian registered online and she made the list by default, but it has now been removed until further notice.

The online information for this year's event has been handicapped due to staffing issues. We appologize for any confusion.

Appears to me the lady's money was taken knowing all along she wouldn't be allowed to play. On the other hand maybe she will be allowed to play since the trend in pool is to allow women to play if they have the money.

The WPBA has nothing to do with the matter as Anna is not a TP (touring professional) yet. It is a great way for a young lady to improve her 9-Ball game.

I don't know too much about the circumstances and I certainly have no idea about the relationship between the Open and the WPBA although I would be interested in seeing how Anna would do in the event.

She does well on the western regional tours and has been in several WPBA events from winning qualifiers. She plays very well and certainly has enough energy to last through the event.

When they say she has "been removed until further notice" does that mean she is out or they are still deciding what to do?

Some time ago, the issue of women playing in the U.S. Open was discussed on another forum. Brady Behrman, son of the man who runs the Open, indicated that an agreement had been made, a number of years ago, to allow the WPBA to use the name "U.S. Open" for their ladies only event. Another part of the agreement was that women would no longer be allowed to play in the U.S. Open, run by Barry Behrman in Virginia, and that would become a mens only event.
Unless something has changed recently, women will not be allowed to play in this event.

I can't say I agree with this situation, as I would love to see the women and the men competing in the same U.S. Open. I think it would be good for pool, as a whole.
