Every few nights wipe your shaft down with an alcohol-dampened rag and dry. Then burnish with brown paper from a shopping bag or a piece of unfinished leather. Also, wash your hands regularly while playing. Do this religiously and you'll go 6 months to a year before you need a shaft reconditioned.

Carry a small towel in your cue bag and use it when your hands sweat. Also washing your hands as previously mentioned works wonders.

Everyone seems to have their own methods.

This works for me.
After every use, I wipe the shaft down with a damp, not wet, paper towel. I immediately follow with a dry paper towel. That will keep it pretty clean.
To keep it smooth, just go over the shaft with some type of burnisher, like a piece of leather or the burnishing side of a Q-Whiz.
Once every few months, you can use a damp, not wet, Clorox Magic Eraser, to clean the shaft well. Follow with a damp paper towel, a dry paper towel and a burnisher.

I have heard of many other methods, including the use of lighter fluid, to clean shafts. They probably all work. You just have to determine which method you feel comfortable with. I am most comfortable with plain water. I have only been using the Magic Eraser for a year or so, but it seems to do a good job and I have seen no ill effects on the wood.

Not only do you need to clean the shaft but also reseal after cleaning. If the shaft was cleaned and reconditioned correctly you should not have to do much to it for about 6 months. In the pool room just wipe her down. There is a whole process involved with a cleaning. You need to spin it on a lathe to do it right.

Lots of good advice, guys,

What The Woim does to keep the shaft clean is wipe the shaft down with a terry cloth towel after every three or four shots, and I'm careful not to apply too much chalk to the tip.

When I first remove my cue from the case I wipe down the shaft and the butt, and when done playing The Woim will use toilet paper or a pocket handkerchief to wipe the chalk dust off the tip and again wipe done the entire cue before putting it back in the case.

As for alcohol wipes - The Woim doesn't use them. No doubt, they work just not on my cue!

Foir many years The Woim never bothered with cleaning his cue at all and, of course, after a few months of playing my shaft took on a nice blue hue.

Yours Truly,
The Woim
