So it leads me to believe that you need to not only gamble but you need to stay within your limits. Either that or hate money. What's right?
Gambling puts you in a pressure situation. Its the same pressure you get in tournaments.

Be sure you don't play for more than you can loose, even if you know you can roll over someone.

I think gambling and tournaments are much different kinds of pressure.

When gambling, you can afford to have more than one or two bad sets. You always have another chance, as long as you have more money in your pocket. IMHO, this is not as pressure packed as tournaments.

In tournaments, depending on whether it is a single or double elimination tournament, if you have one or two bad sets, you are done. You have no more chances. IMHO, this adds a lot of pressure to winning every set.

It doesn't surprise me that Earl is gambling. In the 50's some of the greats resorted to hustling after the money ran dry. Some blame Brunswick. As many pros started gambling to support themselves, stories of hustlers were somewhat common. This even lead a little to the book The Hustler. Truth was, the game didn't support a lot of sponsorship. Even today that remains true. History repeats itself. Good news though, maybe a good pool movie is on the way.

Rich, I play tournaments with the goal of staying undefeated. To me there is no difference between a race to 7 for 50-100 or a tournament with 20-50 dollar entry. JMO...

I think that some people think differently when larger amounts of money are on the line. That's why we see different results with different amounts being bet. Some people, not all.

I agree with this statement. There is no right or wrong here just opinions.
