I went to go pay him off and I went looking for 50 in my pocket and inadvertently pulled out my main bankroll. I pay the guy and we bet a few more games, eventually breaking even and I leave to go watch Jay's midnight ring game.

6 hrs later I am walking to my room and I see the guy I was betting with talking to this guy in the halls. As I pass by they start talking in whispers and I swear I hear the one guy say the word "Asian" really low. I'm Japanese. After one more short loop through the main practice room I start to head to my room and as the elevator door opens I look and see that the other guy that the guy I was betting with was talking to is now right next to me. We are alone and at 6am there is still foot traffic but alot less than normal. I immediately got this really weird feeling and I feigned like I forgot something and walked away to the front desk.

This really creeped me out. Be careful folks. Dont be dumb with your bankroll like I was.

Like other posters have said too, a little common sense can go a long way. Sounds like you sidestepped one, good thing you were aware of your surroundings.

Welcome to Inside Pool, Dave.

Maybe he was undercover security, and the guy you were betting asked him to keep an eye on the suspcious "Asian" guy.

Thanks Eric. I am firm believer that your instincts should be followed when you believe you are in some sort of danger. I use to work in the 90s as a Public Defender in Florida and I cannot tell you how many victims of crime that we deposed all said the same thing. Some moments before they were a victim of violent crime, their instincts told them something was wrong and they didnt listen hard enough.

Interesting .. I haven't been to DCC but my friend who attended last year said elevator is the place to watch out. He said there's been problems in there.

Don't do like I do and throw your whole bankroll on the ground and tell the guy you are woofing at to bet it up. That would usually cause people to stand up and take notice except when your bankroll is only about 1500 and you are at Derby City. Then people look for a second, snicker and turn back to their own conversations.

Seriously though, I have never felt in danger at Derby but I am also very cautious about checking my surroundings. There is no doubt that there are those there that make a living sticking people up. Probably the reason that it doesn't happen more often at Derby is A. a lot of the people there are streetwise enough to avoid it, B. a lot of the people there aren't the type that get stuck up, C. there is a decent amount of security running around.

I thought that Timberly was trying to roll me when she offered to let me sleep in the extra bed one year. But that turned out to be just my overactive fantasy. :-) Thanks for the bed Timberly! I robbed myself of sleep that year.

I have never had any security issues at the Derby either. I have been there every year except this year. I'm still in tears that I couldn't make it.

In fact, the security is so good and all the players are so trustworthy that I usually just put my bankroll in a pocket on a pool table and leave it there while I wonder around the event.

Yeah right. If you know the story you know how lucky I am sometimes.
