Is there a relationship between the size of the pin and the solidity of a cue's hit?

Everything that goes into a cue affects the hit in one way or another, including the pin size. More than anything, it is the cue makers execution of putting all of the parts together. JMHO.

I believe that the shaft taper, ferrule material and joint define the hit of a cue. You can have a cue made with a long 3/8-10 pin and a stainless steel joint, but put a Meucci taper and ferrule on it and all you have is a limp noodle.

I have to agree with Rich on this one. I took one of my cues 3/8 -10 pin it plays great. Took my shaft and screwed it down on a McDermott butt and it was like shooting with a piece of wrotten wood. There is a correlation with the type of pin size weight material and the amount of vibration / feedback you get. If you shoot with one of my cues and then try to go back to a Meucci or Mcdermott or some other mas produced cue you will see a difference. I am not saying mine are the best but there definitely is a defference in the hit. Over the past 5 years the big guys are getting better quality but it is still sub standard as far as I am concerned. They have no way to quality check the assebly of the cue. The looks, sure anybody can look at the cue and say yep looks great. They build some great looking cues for not a lot of money. But you have to ask your self are you buying the cue because it looks great or because it plays great? I guess if you don't play that good you gotta look the part.

I believe in the weakest link theory. In other words everything must lead to a solid hit. Any introduction of soft materials of less than desirable contruction techniques will result in a softer hit.
