The hit of a cue is very subjective. Meaning what you feel in a cue, may not be something someone else likes. The best way to get a feel (pun intended) for a cues hit, is to hit with it yourself and see if it's what YOU like.

Even thou, I've hit with a cue and tell you it hits firm, you may think it hits whippy.

Test drive as many cues as you can and get your own description of what you like.

Sorry, not much help.

Barry

Let me add that different cues from the same maker can feel different too. I'm sorry to Bill Stroud but I've got a buddy that has 2 Joss West cues and one of them hits really good and the other one I wouldn't give a dime for. Could be the choice of woods, could be the tips, could be any number of things. Either way, when you're hitting around with different cues try your best to hit with ones you can purchase if you like.
MULLY
you can get a general idea though

IMHO
i have a nice snakewood point dayton 18.5 or so that hits on the stiff side
its a radial pin into wood. paul will work with you depending on what you
want, and he makes some of the sharpest points out there.
hope that helps a little bit.

I have a Dayton Rambow style cue, Radial pin into wood with a short ivory collared wood to wood joint. 4 sharp (and long) points with 4 veneers. 8 sharp ivory inlays. 19.5 oz and 59" as per my request. This cue has a parabolic taper which graduates in thickness very slowly like I imagine all Paul's cues do. Outstanding shaftwood ! Ivory ferrules with Talisman medium tips. In stiffness, I'd say that it's a medium to stiff with some feedback. In playability I'd rate it a 9 out of a possible 10. Everything on this cue was very carefully chosen and crafted. It's hard to even find the seam on the leather wrap.

I have a 6 point, 3 long ebony and 3 short purpleheart with veneers into BEM cue by Steve Klein. 19 oz and 58". Black phenolic joint collar, wood to wood. It's in the Southwest style with a 3/8 X 11 brass pin and at my request a BEM band was applied on the butt end, along with a leather wrap with nice ringwork at A,B,C,D, and E. The shaft taper is very similar to the Dayton. The first 2 shafts were unacceptable to me, and to make me happy Steve made me two more shafts free of charge which are magnificent. In stiffness, I'd rate the cue a medium, and a 7-8 in playability. In addition to the initial shafts which had excessive grain runout and quite a bit of sugar streaks, the ends of the points were inked in. A very nice job but still inked. Nevertheless, I like this cue very much.

All in all, my Dayton is the nicest cue I've ever owned, including my JossWest. Paul is a master cuemaker flying under the radar IMHO, and definitely a bargain at his current low to reasonable prices. I'd like to own another Dayton, and I can't recommend him highly enough. I have about 12 cues and I'm pretty fussy. I would recommend Paul to my friends without reservation. The Steve Klein is a nice second, YMMV...Tom
