Default How good is my old cue?
I'm new to this forum. I have not shot pool for a long time, but just recently got a new table, and have a question about my cue.

I bought it in 1978 I think. It is a Huebler, two piece, no inlays, wood appears to be walnut, dark colored anyway. White plastic joint, and white plastic at the butt. and a couple of colored rings at the joint and at the butt. Black linen wrap.

It is still perfectly straight, and no cracks or anything. The only marks on it are HI 2 at the butt.

I don't see hardly any mention of Huebler cues on this board, Just wondering what is the up to date thinking about Huebler, and what are your thoughts about my cue. I think I paid about $125 for it .

Wonder what it is worth today?

I don't have enough smarts to post a picture. Sorry.

Where else might I look to find information about this cue?

Not sure if I posted in the right forum, if not, I'll do better.

Thanks in advance for any help. August

you will hear Huebler talked about once in awhile.nothing wrong with it.a word of advise you have had it this many years do not get rid of it...it has too many memories..after playing awhile with it you might want to get a different tip..tips have come along way in construction the past 30 years..

It's worth at least what you paid for it and prolly a little more.

The "customs" have appreciated at a greater rate than the catalogue cues.

The old HUBBIES are bullet proof and if it's straight I'd go ahead and play with it.

I'll bet it's never missed a ball

I appreciate the replies. Couple of questions on replacing the tip, do you replace just the leather portion, or the whole plastic end??. How do you remove the old tip?

Is there a certain hardness or style of tip that is best to use?

Adam, I could probably shoot just as well with a broomstick, but this old cue does feel good, and I am slowly working the misses out of it.

I learned a few years ago to take the cue in to a PH and have their guy replace the tip and ferrule if required. It will cost you a little but it will be done right.

Ask around and there may be someone that does that kind of stuff thru word of mouth. Some PH's will act as the middle man to pass on the work.

I just had a furrule and tenon replaced with a Tiger tip for $30. The old ferrule and the tenon broke off. He didn't shorten the shaft to do this.

Basically used Qs sell for about 1/2 of what they sold for, when new. Just because it is old, doesn't mean that it is worth more. Basically only Qs made by someone famous, owned by someone famous or a Q that is just loaded with diamonds, ivory, gold etc appreciate in price. SORRY, but people looking to buy a USED Q, are generally looking to buy a CHEAP Q. Collector Qs are like anything else. If there is something VERY special about something, you will find others interested in collecting it...JER

Unless there is something wrong with "the plastic end", called a ferrule, you only have to replace the leather portion.

How do you remove the old tip?

The old tip will be cut off. All of the residue has to be carefully sanded off, at the proper angle, without damaging the ferrule. This is best done by a good cue repair person, who has the proper equipment. If you don't know what you are doing, it is definitely not a do it yourself job.

Is there a certain hardness or style of tip that is best to use?

There are numerous types and hardnesses of tips. Choosing a tip is very personal and you may end up trying a number of tips before finding one you really like. If you think you would like a softer tip, an Elk Master is a good place to start. If you think you would prefer a harder tip, Le Pro is a decent tip, but some people find them to be inconsistent. A Triangle tip may be a better choice. Some people prefer layered tips, but they are more expensive. Both Tiger and Moori make a number of tips with difference hardness levels. I prefer the Moori "Slow" tips, which is their soft version, but that is JMHO.
As I indicated above, I strongly recommend you have any tip replacement done by a good cue repair person. Ask around and you should be able to find one near you. He may also be able to help you choose a good tip to start with. I also recommend you try different tips, to determine what you like best. I don't mean that you should change tips every week. Maybe put on a new tip every few months, until you find one you really like. There are many choices and you will never be able to try them all.

BTW, your Huebler cue should serve you well for years to come. That is, until you catch the bug and you just want to buy something different.

I hope all of this helps.

Welcome back to the World of Pool. Surprised at the lack of change?

As for your tip, The Woim heartily recommends having a pro do it - see if there's a custom cue builder in your area and make friends with him.

Shoot straight and keep the cueball from flying across the room and we'll get along just fine!

Your's Truly,
The Woim
