You know, oddly enough I've seen people, that I would consider on the verge of abusing their cues the way they slam them down, that have never had a problem with cracking and then I've seen situations like yours where it was barely tapped and it cracked in half. Go figure. You just never know. If there is no sign of abuse on the cue like scrapes and cuts in other areas the cuemaker may be willing to repair it for free. Depending on how long you've had it etc... Never hurts to check that way first. Any other signs of misuse though and that avenue is closed.

Default Butt Cap?
Some here are referring to the rubber bumper. The butt cap is the hard plastic part usually 1/2 to 2 inches long at the base of the cue that the rubber bumper serves to protect. I have seen these crack from abuse due to the rubber bumper missing, and from a very hard slam that compresses the rubber then shatters the cap. It was pointed out earlier that the cap material was cheap, could be! I have seen plenty of molded caps on supposedly high end cues. I have never seen a quality cap break under ordinary circumstances. A quality cap has cloth fiber woven into the phenolic plastic filler. It is very tough material. But harder to machine, then also harder to sand and requires a finish like the wood. I use it on all my custom cues as does every custom cuemaker that I know. But the big boys make more money and have less work invested in molded caps!
Come to think of it the collars on shafts and butts that I have replaced were also made with plastic with no cloth woven into them. Many on high end production cues. See a pattern here? The materials to make a better cue are out there, but more money is made using cheaper parts. Now you know one reason why we have to charge more!

yea....i guess Schon is highly reguarded as a great hitting very high quality cue by many top amatures and pros because they put out cues made of inferior material...go figure....i guess Schon owners are all just stupid for buying such a cheaply made cue...

Maybee thats why you can buy a Schon, and after using it for 10 years frequently, you can walk into any tourney or respectable pool hall, sell that cue, and get most of your origional investment back, because they put out inferior product. Thats why people Pay over 400$ for their base model, because they like buying junk and they dont know what a good cue is...what suckers...

people can bash Good campanys all they want...they are not fooling anyone thats been around the game for more than a few years....that repair guy is an idiot...he over charged you probably 15$ for a new buttcap. he seen you coming a mile away.

Schon makes Great playing cues one of the Very best in the world without a doubt....
The great thing about Schon and few other respectable makers is that their base model hits the same as thier 2000$ model and is made the same aswell (minus cosmetics)so you can go plainJane and still get A great hitting cue....thats what makes them great they are the most consistent hitting cues in the world(schon)

ive only hit with a Joss a few times i didnt like the feel of it...but it wasnt a bad cue...

I have to agree with you about one thing that you said (there is no reputable cuemaker putting out poor workmanship or using inferior materials in an effort to GAIN repair work. Because if someone gets a cue with inferior materials the cue manufacturer would certainly never see the cue again.

However, many production cue makers do use much less expensive materials or have certain parts manufactured outside the USA in their products. I for one see many problems similar to this all the time. Have you ever seen how the butt cap of a Joss cue is attached? The tenon that the butt cap slides was approximately 3/16th of an inch, which means that the butt cap is being held in place by finish and the cues weight bolt. Now this was a fact on the last two Joss butt caps that I replaced. One cue was from the 1980's, and the other was from around 1995.

Now I have never had this kinda problem with Schon cues, so that is the only point I agree with you on. So to say what was said is all a cheap shot is not an accurate statement. Now some people may think that this is not the place to mention problems like these, and I would agree if there was no basis, however, that is not the case. Because many people rely on information from these forum's to help make decisions when buying a new cue. Many production cue makers, and even some custom cue makers do produce inferior cues from inferior materials and they have been doing so for a long time. This may be because of the price of materials, a lack of knowledge, of because they they are trying to maximize their profit margin, I do not know.

By the way, if you are not a cue maker or repairman yourself speak to some before you make comments like those above, you may be surprised at the answers you get.

Have a great night!!!!!
