I use playing cards, very cheap and effective...
You also need to address the joints between the slate sections, you can use, bee's wax, Bondo, anything that sands easily and will not crack. this is very important to a good playing table.

I have tried to shim it but with only marginal sucess. Any secrets to shimming a 3 piece slate table where the table is perfectly level but the end slate piece is slightly raised in the middle near the head string?
Appreciate any help.
