BCA Revamps 9-Ball Championships

New Look, Name, and Format Aim to Better Promote Sport

The Billiard Congress of America (BCA) announced it has enhanced its 9-ball championship event for 2008. The name of the event has also been changed to the “GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships.” GenerationPool.com is the new BCA consumer website slated for launch in early 2008.

For the first time, the 2008 GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships will be held in conjunction with the International Billiard & Home Recreation Expo, June 12-14, in Charlotte, North Carolina. The tournament’s semifinals and finals events will take place June 11-12 in the Grand Ballroom at the Charlotte Convention Center.

“We wanted to produce a standout event and we knew that we would need to change the look and feel of our tournament to achieve this goal,” said BCA President Ivan Lee. “We will be changing the arena, the format, the production techniques, and the environment of the tournament in order to highlight the professional level of play that will be taking place. The players will be treated to a first-class event in an upscale playing environment.”

Further, ESPN is committing more time to showing the GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships on ESPN and ESPN2 in 2008. After speaking with ESPN about the innovative changes developed for the tournament, they were thrilled to add two additional hours of programming for the event, meaning the event will air for a minimum of six hours. These additional hours of airtime will add more than 30% of first-run coverage shown on television.

“ESPN is pleased to cover three hours from both the men’s and women’s GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championship events in 2008,” said Nick Dawson, associate program manager for ESPN. “The event is one of the marquee billiard events in the world each year and the added hours will allow viewers the opportunity to enjoy both semifinals and the championship from each division, along with additional tournament competition.”

The arena will include reserved VIP seating, inclusive of upscale leather chairs, cocktail tables, and stadium seating, creating the ultimate viewing environment. The event will also feature a VIP hospitality area with all-inclusive food and beverage service, early access to the arena, and a high-end hospitality area. The new championships will provide a visual backdrop for television that promotes the game in a first-class, appealing format.

The 2008 event will continue to feature a men’s and women’s division. Both divisions will begin with 32 players on Monday. The semifinals that will take place the evening of Wednesday, June 11, and Thursday, June 12, will consist of the men’s and women’s finals. Both events will begin with a VIP reception.

In an effort to keep the linearity of the Women’s Professional Billiards Association (WPBA) tour, the women’s event will begin with 64 players June 6-7 at Smokin’ Cue, which is located at 10901 University City Blvd. in Charlotte. Once narrowed to 32 players, the event will move to the Charlotte Convention Center.

“The WPBA fully understands and supports our desire to redefine our event,” said Lee. “But they requested that we allow them to keep the field size from years past. Faced with our constraints in time and location, we worked cooperatively with the WPBA to arrange an off-site start for the women’s side of the event so that they can deliver 32 players to the start of the event on Sunday night. The willingness of the WPBA to work with the BCA to resolve this issue illustrates a new spirit of cooperation in our industry.”

Tickets for the GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships can be purchased by phone beginning March 31, 2008, at 9:00 a.m. EST. Information on ticket prices and the phone number to order tickets will be announced in March.

The BCA will also be inducting its fifty-second member into the BCA Hall of Fame during the intermission between the men’s and women’s GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships final matches on Thursday, June 12. This exclusive ceremony will take place in the main arena and will continue the long tradition of recognizing and paying tribute to the world’s greatest billiard players and contributors.

“Hosting the 2008 BCA Expo, the new GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships, and the BCA Hall of Fame induction ceremony all in close proximity will allow many facets of the industry the opportunity to reconnect with each other.” said Lee. “The week will truly be a celebration of billiards.”

Brunswick's Gold Crown® Legend Keeps Getting Better

Brunswick Billiards’ lineup of seven new billiards tables reinforces the company’s global reputation for innovation.  One new model is an updated version of one of the most legendary names in the game.
The flagship Gold Crown® table, first manufactured in 1961, and widely recognized as the professional players’ table of choice, proves some things truly do get better with age. The Gold Crown V was launched to rave reviews at the recent Billiard Congress of America Show in Las Vegas and is destined for upscale billiards establishments, tournament hosts and international dealers. It replaces the Gold Crown IV which was introduced in 1997.

“The Gold Crown is the oldest billiards table model in production and it sets the standard around the world for its unmatched quality, accuracy and playability,” said Debbie Groshek, brand manager for Brunswick Billiards.   “New features in the Gold Crown V signal an important evolution in the greatest name in billiards.”

Without compromising the classic lines, the new Brunswick Gold Crown V features a revamped ball storage box that provides a full front facing for all 16 balls. A new apron extrusion provides a bolder, stronger stance accented by new 45-degree, brushed-nickel corner pocket castings.  The Gold Crown V is available in mahogany or matte black with nickel trim. The top-of-the line model, available as an eight-foot pro or nine-foot table, has an MSRP of $8,999.  A nine-foot tournament edition is also available featuring tighter pockets engineered to more stringent World Pool-Billiard Association specifications.

“The Brunswick Gold Crown V is a world-class pool table, engineered for those who demand the very best. This table is the professional players’ table of choice,” said Groshek.

“In addition, a new Gold Crown V Tournament Edition table is going to be made available for home sales so consumers will have the option of playing on the same table as the pros."

WPA Expels Pan-American Billiard Confederation E-mail

WPA Expels Pan-American Billiard Confederation

The World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) has today announced the expulsion of the Pan-American Billiard Confederation (CPB) as a member body. This action, taken by a vote of the General Assembly of the WPA, came after several days of deliberations and hearings.

Ian Anderson, President of the WPA, said: “We do not take this sort of action lightly. However, the independent course that the CPB has charted in the past year has been found to be inconsistent with the goals and direction of the WPA. We wish the CPB success in their future endeavors but we must seek to affiliate with those whose objectives are consistent with our own.”

2008 International Billiard and Home Recreation Expo Far from Conventional

Southern Sophistication Meets Serious Business

With 2008 rapidly approaching, planning has moved into high gear for the 25th Annual International Billiard and Home Recreation Expo, June 12-14, 2008, at the Charlotte Convention Center. Combining a unique mix of innovative exhibitors, qualified buyers, strategic business seminars, professional pool play, recognition for the game’s greatest players and a little fun, the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) is pleased to announce an exciting line up that is “far from conventional.”

“The 2008 Expo will present attendees with a host of business opportunities on the floor, networking opportunities throughout the show and a little fun on the side,” said Ivan Lee, BCA president. “Research from the 2007 show indicates attendees and exhibitors were equally satisfied with their experience and took note at the efforts to improve the show’s overall content. Taking the ideas we incorporated into last year’s show, including strategic business seminars and networking events, and dedicating increased efforts to bring new exhibitors with innovative products to the Expo floor, will make the 2008 Expo a great show for exhibitors and attendees alike.”

Withmore than 20 hours of open floor time and 200,000+ square feet of exhibit space inthe Charlotte Convention Center, hundreds of exhibitors will be on hand with productdisplays ranging from the “classics,” such as billiard tables, cues, cases, cloth, slate, balls, chalk, racks, stands, lighting, instructional products, publications, accessories and leaguesystems, to complementary lines like furniture, bars, darts, room décor, poker supplies, game tables, video games, music systems, tanning beds, spas, apparel and novelty items. The Business of Billiards Seminar Series will provide exclusive education sessions for BCA Expo attendees with a total of six seminars.

The highlight of the educational sessions will be keynote speaker Kyle Petty, NASCAR Nextel Cup driver and CEO of Petty Enterprises. As CEO of Petty Enterprises, Petty remains a fixture at his family-owned business. Petty has been able to productively use his family business, and take advantage of his incredible driving talents and people skills, to build a winning driving resume and rebuild a racing business that has been one of the most successful in the history of motorsports. A proven winner, Petty stays focused and determined to keep Petty Enterprises at the forefront of the motorsports world. In addition, the Business of Billiards Seminar Series will feature business improvement sessions specifically for retailers and poolroom operators, and general sessions for all attendees. Topics will include retail merchandising strategies, poolroom design tactics, Internet marketing strategies, and charity and promotions tips. The results of the BCA consumer research project also will be presented.

The BCA is also turning to laughs for this year’s industry celebration. Comedian Jake
Johannsen will provide a great night of entertainment during the Expo. Johannsen is one of David Letterman’s favorite comics, as he has appeared on Letterman’s show over 29 times. Johannsen’s bizarre take on life and his uniquely intelligent style have made him a regular at comedy clubs all over the country. Scheduled for Friday evening, Johannsen will provide a fun-filled night at the Expo. Also this year, and for the first time ever, the BCA’s 9-Ball Championship Tournament – the generationpool.com 9-Ball Championships – will be held in conjunction with the BCA Expo. The 2008 BCA 9-Ball Championships will feature professional men’s and women’s divisions.

Semi-final and final events will take place June 11-12, 2008, in the Grand Ballroom at the Charlotte Convention Center and will be aired on ESPN. In addition, the 52nd BCA Hall of Fame Induction ceremony will take place June 12 during the intermission of the final events.

“With the combination of the 2008 BCA Expo, the 2008 generationpool.com 9-Ball
Championships and the BCA Hall of Fame induction ceremony, this year’s event will truly be a celebration of billiards,” said Lee. “We are looking forward to a highly successful week in Charlotte.”
