New York City, NY- 37 invited straight pool pros and 11 qualifier winners began the 74th World Tournament. Now only four remain. The third and final stage of the Andy Cloth 74th World Tournament of 14.1 is drawing to a close as the final four players will decide the championship. Russia, England, or the United States will claim the crown.
The ANDY CLOTH 74th World Tournament is taking place on August 4th-9th, 2014. Dragon Promotions and Dr. Michael Fedak are pleased to bring the 74th production of the oldest billiard event in the world . Also sponsored by Andy Cloth, Kamui Brands, OB Cues, Amsterdam Billiard Club, Realrealcool.com, Pool & Billiard Magazine , Aramith Balls, and George Beckman Kinetic Sculptures. Official patron 14.1 aficionados are Stu Mattana, Tom Gleich, Harold Siegel, Dr. Greg Diehl Plastic Surgery, and Official World 14.1 photographer Charles Eames. A star studded field has made it back once again to the 14.1 extravaganza taking place at Steinway Billiards Cafe, who is once more hosting the world’s greatest straight pool championship.
In a back and forth dog fight, Darren Appleton and Mike Dechaine fell off their games as fatigue was clearly showing. Appleton could be seen taking breaks (2 are allowed) and drinking coffee throughout the match. They traded leads throughout the match with no one getting the significant edge. In the end, Appleton was able to stay off Dechaine 200-172.
“I got real tired. I couldn’t focus like I did the other matches. I drank coffee and I think drank too much and got a little jittery. It was still a good finish and I know more what to do next year”, said #2 USA ranked Mike Dechaine.
Shane Van Boening kept up his ultra consistent play as he never gave up his lead over Mika Immonen throughout the 200 point battle. Immonen was not sharp and clearly was tired, which is uncharacteristic of the Finnish champion. Immonen missed a couple key opportunities on easy misses. Eventually Van Boening closed the match at 200-115.
“I admit I was tired. I had a long wait between the quarter finals with Earl and Shane. I should have rested more.” said Immonen.
“I been practicing with Earl Strickland in 14.1 before the event. I also been putting in 5 hours a day straight pool practice and working on better patterns. “, explained Van Boening when asked what he did to prepare this year. He added, “I haven’t had a close match. I think I’m going to win the World 14.1”
Hard to argue with that.
