Guzman Grabs Tri-State Billiard Title
Tri-State Tour / Brooklyn, NY
Juan Guzman enjoyed an undefeated run through the June 8-9 stop of the Tri-State Tour, besting Raymond Lee in the finals for first place. The $2,750-added tournament was hosted by Gotham Billiards in Brooklyn, NY, and drew a field of 62 A-D players.
Guzman was challenged by Geoff Bauer in the winners’ side final four but faced him down 7-5 to advance to the hot seat match. That was where he first met Lee, who had just sent Dennis Kennedy to the one-loss side 6-3. It was a close match, but Lee ended up falling to Guzman 8-5.
On the west side, Steve Wright sent Meshak Daniel home in seventh place 7-6, as Luis Jimenez tied with Daniel after being ousted by Ambi Estevez 6-3. Estevez went on to eliminate Kennedy in fifth place 6-5, while Bauer bested Wright 7-6. In the quarterfinal match, Bauer relegated Estevez to a fourth-place finish 9-6.
Lee earned his rematch with Guzman by besting Bauer in the semifinals 8-4. The final match went game for game until, with the score knotted at 6, Guzman pulled ahead and won the final two games to claim the title 8-6.
