Meglino and Jacobs finish off the FBT Winter 8-Ball Open at Slate Billiards
New tournament format seeks to level playing field
Boynton Beach, Fla. (Dec. 15, 2012) – Forty players packed Slate Billiards in Boynton Beach, Florida, Saturday night at the Flamingo Billiards Tour $300-added Winter Open handicapped 8-Ball tournament. In the end Anthony Meglino and Smokey Jacobs split the top two spots and the prize money.
This modified double elimination format, race to three, with three skill levels allowed players in all three levels to make the money. Players initially competed against others in the same skill level. The highest finishers in each level then redrew into a final board of eight. At that point, the matches were handicapped and the format switched to single elimination.
Making the final board: Alicia DeAbrue, Christian Lopez, Tom McCloud, Matt Lussier, Anthony Meglino, Smokey Jacobs, Sam Kantor, and Johnny Aguilar. DeAbrue, Lopez, Lussier and McCloud lost in the first round, Meglino then stopped Kantor, and Jacobs got by Aguilar. Due to the lateness of the event, Meglino and Jacobs split the pot.
