O’Callaghan Catches Tri-State Billiard Win
Tri-State Tour / Flushing, NY
Gary O’Callaghan captured his first Tri-State Tour win, returning from a late loss to take the title over Wanlop Chantarakoikit 11-6. The amateur 9-ball event offered a $1,500-added purse and was held at Carom Café Billiards in Flushing, NY.
When O’Callaghan was in the final four on the winners’ side, he ran into Carl Yusuf Khan, who won the tour’s event two weeks prior. Khan was looking for a repeat and delivered O’Callaghan to the one-loss side 7-5. Chantarakoikit had success with his match as well, defeating David Mickle 7-5. In the hot seat match, Chantarakoikit edged out Khan for the 9-7 win.
Looking for revenge, O’Callaghan rebounded with a 7-5 victory over Lidio Ramirez, as Hector Ruiz won his match over Mickle 6-4, who tied with Ramirez for fifth place. O’Callaghan then dominated Ruiz in the quarterfinals 7-2.
Now facing Khan again, this time for the right to advance to the final match, O’Callaghan didn’t back down and won their match with a close 7-5 margin. Chantarakoikit took an early lead in the finals, but O’Callaghan fought back to tie the score at 4-all and then went on to win it all 11-6.
