Hundal and Dechaine to Face off
Turning Stone Classic XIX / Verona, NY
The winners’ side at the Turning Stone Classic XIX has whittled down to only four players with more contenders on the west side of the chart returning for the final day.
Looking to improve upon his runner-up finish at last December’s event, Raj Hundal has taken care of business, defeating Hunter Lombardo and then Tom D’Alfonso, both 9-6, to remain in the winners’ bracket. His first opponent will be Mike “Fireball” Dechaine, who has faced anything but an easy line-up in this event but remained unfazed, delivering players such as Jason Klatt, Dennis Hatch, and Matt Krah to the one-loss side. His latest match with Rodney Morris went double-hill, with Dechaine scoring the last game to win 9-8.
In the other winners’ side bracket, Mario Morra fought his way through Virginia’s Brandon Shuff 9-7 and then Florida’s Donny Mills 9-6 to surface in the final four. Facing him in the first round Sunday will be Shawn Putnam. “Big Bubba” has also had a tough draw, having to meet both Ernesto and then Oscar Dominguez, as well as Corey Deuel.
Several players are still fighting through the one-loss side. Having gotten through Stevie Moore 9-3, Shuff next has to face D’Alfonso. Though he suffered a first-round loss, Johnny Archer is going strong and will meet Morris in the following round. Also still alive, Lombardo and Mills will play, and so will Deuel and Jeremy Sossei.
