Meyer-Gabia Grabs First Tri-State Title
Tri-State Tour / Flushing, NY
Kim Meyer-Gabia earned her first title on the Tri-State Tour at their June 16 stop, going undefeated to split top honors with Chris Karp in the final match. The $1,000-added prize fund attracted a field of 37 to Carom Café in Flushing, NY.
A double-hill win over Pat Mareno put Meyer-Gabia in the hot seat match, where she faced Stewart Warnock, who had just had his own hill-hill victory over Karp. It was a close match, but Meyer-Gabia turned Warnock away 8-5 to remain unchallenged.
Karp went on to oust Basdeo Sookhai in fifth place 7-4, while Mareno joined Sookhai after a 7-2 victory by Ron Mason. In the quarterfinal match, Mason was trumped by Karp 7-4 and went home in fourth place.
Warnock awaited Karp in the semifinal match, and Karp rose to the challenge to defeat his opponent 7-2. In the finals, because of the lateness of the hour, Karp and Meyer-Gabia agreed to split, with Meyer-Gabia taking the title.
