Sandaler Pulls Down the Port
Poison Amateur Tour / Port Charlotte, FL
Jim Sandaler came through a strong field at the July 30-31 stop of the Poison Amateur Tour to take top honors, besting Burl Curtwright in the finals. The $1,000-added stop drew 27 players to Veterans Billiards in Port Charlotte, FL.
The event began with some big guns taking losses. Sandaler bested U.S. Amateur champion Raymond Linares in the second round 7-4, and Florida State champ David Uwate took a loss to Normand Pincince 7-6. Sandaler went on to record wins over Pincince 7-4 and then Brian Davalos 7-4 to reach the winners’ side final. There he faced Julio Del Pozo, who had recorded wins over Kelly Coyle 7-6, Robert Henderson 7-4, Ed Acosta 7-2, and Curtwright 7-6. Sandaler wasted no time in capturing the hot seat with a solid 7-3 win.
The one-loss side was heating up with Linares taking out road partner Uwate 5-1, but this win was short-lived as Linares was then ousted by local player Trey Jankowski 5-3. Felix Luna was making his way back through the west side—after taking a 7-4 loss to Cartwright, Luna went onto notch wins over Travis Lasswell 5-3, Dan Boone 5-1, Pincince 5-3, and Jonathon Wing 5-3. His run came to an end with a 5-2 loss to Curtwright to leave Luna in fifth. Curtwright then recorded a 5-3 win over Jankowski that put him straight in the finals, as Del Pozo was unable to make it back the next morning.
The final match was all one-way traffic with Sandaler coming out strong and never letting up to record a 7-2 win, taking the title and leaving Curtwright in a respectable second place.
