Sacco Scoops Tri-State Billiards Win
Tri-State Tour / East Rutherford, NJ
After enjoying an unchallenged run through the field at the Tri-State Tour’s July 30 stop, Rich Sacco eked out a hill-hill victory in the finals to claim the title. The $500-added 9-ball tournament attracted a field of 30 players to Castle Billiards in East Rutherford, NJ.
In the winners’ side final four, Sacco breezed past Jim McManus 7-3 to reach the hot seat match. His opponent, Lou Loria, had just sent Luis Jiminez to the one-loss side 6-5. Jiminez and Sacco battled for the hot seat, with Sacco coming out the winner 7-4.
Now on the west side, Loria was determined to make a run for the title and started out by eliminating Arturo Reyes in fifth place 7-0. Tying with Reyes was Ed Culhane, who was ousted by McManus 7-6. Another hill-hill match came next for McManus in the quarterfinals; this time, though, he was on the wrong end as Loria bested him 7-6.
The semifinal match between Loria and Jiminez was another double-hill bout, with Loria squeaking past Jiminez 6-5 to advance to the finals and face Sacco. Though Sacco held an early 5-1 lead, Loria fought his way back into the match, and it was all Sacco could do to eke out a hill-hill victory.
