Waco Strikes Again on Lone Star Billiards Tour
Lone Star Billiards Tour / Austin, TX
The weekend of June 25-26 attracted 62 players to the Lone Star Billiards Tour’s $1,000-added 9-ball event, held at The Grand in Austin, TX. Doug Young captured the open division title, Jennifer Kraber took the ladies’ event, and James Davis Sr. won the one-pocket tournament.
The final eight on the winners’ side of the open 9-ball division saw Davis Sr. advance over Chris Sharier in a hill-hill match 9-8, but he was stopped in the next round by Young, who had just sent Benny Scott to the one-loss side 9-3. Al Mason was making his own way to the hot seat match, delivering Mauricio Chairez to the west side 9-6. Young and Mason played lightening fast for the hot seat, but Mason came out on top 9-7.
There was no easy go of it on the west side. Jake Graustein, Steve Lindgren, Frank Ferrar, and Ricardo Espinosa all made it to the second day and in the money. Graustein fell to Velasquez 7-1, Chairez defeated Lindgren 7-4, Ferrar ousted Sharier 7-2, and Scott eliminated Ricardo Espinosa. When the dust settled, it was “Bastrop” and Walker who battled for third. Walker was eliminated by Bastrop, who then met his doom at the hands of Young in the next round. This pitted a Young versus Mason rematch in which Young exacted some vengeful play to capture his second consecutive event on tour.
In the ladies’ event, 2011 BCA National champion Kraber skated through her bracket while Temple’s Christy Grigsby earned herself a shot at the hot seat as well. On the west side after a first-round loss to Grigsby, veteran player Cathy Jo (Sawyer) Almanza won three consecutive matches before she fell again to Grigsby in a hill-hill heartbreaker. In the final, Kraber wasted no time making her stand, defeating Grigsby 7-3.
The one-pocket event saw Davis Sr. best Casey Crews and Walker wax Young to meet each other in the hot seat. It was Davis Sr. over Walker, as Young expeditiously made his way through the one-loss side. Young ousted Walker but fell to Bastrop in the first set of the final.
