Khan Topples Mason for Tri-State Billiards Title
Tri-State Tour / New York City, NY
Ron Mason went undefeated to the final match of the May 28 stop on the Tri-State Tour, only to be upended by Carl Yusuf Khan for the billiards title. The $1,000-added Memorial Day weekend event took place at Amsterdam Billiards and Bar in New York City, NY, and garnered a field of 27.
Mason went into the winners’ side final four to face off against Chris Karp, whom he bested decisively 7-2 to advance to the hot seat match. His opponent there was Jacob Schwartz, who had just sent Arturo Reyes to the one-loss side of the chart 7-5. Mason easily handled Schwartz 7-1 to await a finals opponent, while Schwartz tried his luck on the west side.
Meanwhile, Khan, who suffered a second-round loss to Billy Cheng, was making his way through the left side and eliminated Pat DiBuono 7-5 to meet up with Karp, whom he whitewashed 7-0 to reach the quarterfinals. His opponent, Cheng, had just delivered a 7-0 donut to Reyes but failed to follow through in his next match, and Khan sent him home in fourth place with a 7-3 win.
Khan kept up his winning ways against Schwartz in the semifinals, eliminating his opponent in third place 7-2. Still on a roll, Khan advanced to the final match against Mason. Khan bested Mason 7-3 in the first set of the double-elimination final match, and the second set went hill-hill. At 6-all, Mason hung a crucial 7 ball, and Khan capitalized to win the match and title.
