Jones Throws Gauntlet at Home Court
Ultimate 10-Ball Championships / Frisco, TX
The early rounds at the Ultimate 10-Ball Championships have concluded, with many of the scores ending with lopsided results because of the seeding. The second annual tournament is hosted by Embassy Suites Hotel in Frisco, TX, and features a $50,000-added prize purse.
In the women’s division, which garnered 54 participants and is a race to 7, Allison Fisher came through the first round with flying colors, sending Kim Pierce to the west side 7-1. Kelly Fisher fared as well, defeating Miho Nakajima 7-4. Ming Ng held the advantage over Helena Thornfeldt 7-3, Melissa Little whitewashed Cindy Parvala, and Dawn Hopkins won her match over Sharon Hubbard 7-1.
The 92-player men’s division was very much the same as the women’s, with uneven scores the norm. Shane Van Boening dominated Cliff Joyner 8-1, Johnny Archer whitewashed Juan Parra, Mike Dechaine bested Roel Pesetes 8-3. Jesse Engel, the young gun who created a stir at last year’s U.S. Open by defeating first Earl Strickland and then Mike Sigel, won his match against Danny Ellis 8-1. Shaun “Get Some” Wilkie also dealt a donut to his opponent, Uriah Richardson, Dennis “The Hatchetman” Hatch routed Terry McCalpin 8-0, and Shawn Putnam decimated Lei Jia 8-1.

But one match went all the way: Jonathan Pinegar versus Jeremy Jones. “Hennessee From Tennessee” and “Double J” fought a hill-hill battle on the live stream table, with neither giving up an inch in the fight to 8 games. At 7-all, it was a massive safety battle, with Pinegar ducking on the 4 ball and Texas favorite Jones returning with a defensive move. Finally Jones gained a toehold and ran with it, pocketing the remaining balls to win the match 8-7.
