Ochoa Punishes Port Arthur Field
Lone Star Billiards Tour / Port Arthur, TX
Sylver Ochoa and Ming Ng dominated the Lone Star Billiards Tour’s February 12-13 event, taking first place in the open and ladies’ division, respectively. The $1,350-added tournament was hosted by Crazy 8’s Family Pool Room in Port Arthur, TX, and drew a 48-player, all-star cast.
In the open event, the final four winners’ side saw Ochoa defeat Steve Lenz 9-7 while Brent Thomas took down David Gutierrez 9-7. This staged a first-time hot seat match between Ochoa and Thomas. The match was tight, but Thomas pulled through with his first hot seat match win hill-hill.
On the west side, Danny Lee fell to Gutierrez 7-3 and young gun Zach Marguardt from Wisconsin was defeated by Lenz 7-5. Gutierrez bested Lenz 7-3 and met Ochoa for the first semifinal match-up. Ochoa eliminated Gutierrez 7-3 to earn a rematch with Thomas. The first set went to Ochoa 9-7, as did the second set 7-6.
Belinda Lee came on strong in the ladies’ 9-ball division, winning her first three consecutive matches, but she was ousted from the hot seat by Ng 7-6. Kim Pierce won five matches in a row after her first-round loss to Marie Chhuon, but she was then eliminated by Loretta Lindgren 5-1. Lee defeated Lindgren for a rematch with Ng and returned with a vengeance and a 7-6 victory in the first set, but Ng closed the second set 5-2.
