Olinger Ousts White for Great Southern Billiards Title
Great Southern Billiard Tour / Bristol, TN
Alex Olinger topped an impressive field of 100 players who came out to the February 19-20 stop on the Great Southern Billiard Tour, besting Brian White in the final match. The $1,500-added amateur event was hosted by Borderline Billiards in Bristol, TN.
Olinger won five matches in a row to reach the winners’ side final four, where he faced off against Cory Morphew. He sent Murphew packing 9-3 and went on to meet Mike Cantrell, who had just sent John Thompson to the one-loss side 9-5. Olinger came through unscathed, winning their match 9-5 and delivering Cantrell to the semifinals.
On the west side, Thompson quickly fell to White 11-4, while Gary Cairnes tied with Thompson for fifth place when he was eliminated by Morphew 7-3. Morphew was no match for White in the ensuing quarterfinals, though, as White breezed past him 11-3. White also had few troubles dispatching Cantrell 11-7 to move on to the finals against Olinger. There he met his match—though it was a close match, Olinger was the one to claim the title 9-9 in their handicapped finals.
