Culhane Captures Tri-State Billiards Win
Tri-State Tour / East Rutherford, NJ
Ed Culhane warded off a late charge from Christian Smith in the finals of the February 5 Tri-State Tour event to take first place. Culhane and 49 others gathered at Castle Billiards in East Rutherford, NJ, for the $500-added, B-D tournament.
Smith took the right side of the bracket by storm, besting Steve Wade 8-5 to reach the hot seat match. There he faced off against Bogie Uzdejczyk, who had just sent Brian Capp to the one-loss side 7-2. It was a hill-hill affair, but Smith ultimately prevailed 7-6.
Culhane was fighting his way through the west side of the chart, ousting Paul Raval and Guy Iannuzzi before running into Capp. Theirs was another hill-hill match, but Culhane was the 7-6 victor. Jake Schwartz, who had just eliminated Steve Wade 7-2, was Culhane’s opponent in the quarterfinals, and though he put up a good fight, Culhane carried on with a 7-4 win.
Uzdejczyk, just over from the winners’ side, faced off with Culhane in the semifinal match. This was yet another nail-biter, with Culhane advancing to the finals 7-6. Culhane took an easy 7-1 lead in the final match against Smith only to watch as Smith roared back into the match and brought the score to double-hill. However, Smith’s efforts were in vain, as Culhane notched the final rack and took the title.
