Souvanthong Sweeps Joss Billiards Event
Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour / Williamsville, NY

Bucky Souvanthong had his work cut out for him when he came upon Dennis Hatch twice at the sixth stop of the Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour, and he was more than ready for it. Souvanthong outlasted “The Hatchet Man” both times they met at the $1,500-added main event, which drew 38 players to Bison Billiards in Williamsville, NY, the weekend of November 20-21.

Souvanthong rode a strong 9-4 win over Randy Fawcett into the hot seat match, where he faced Hatch for the first time. Hatch, who’d just blown past Dean McNaughton 9-1, found himself at the opposite end of the spectrum against Souvanthong, and he moved west into the semifinals 9-1.

On the left side of the bracket, Mike Patrowicz notched wins over Hendrik Drost 9-0 and Ron Casanzio 9-2 before coming upon Fawcett, who dropped him in fifth place 9-4. Meanwhile, Dan Heidrich, who’d fallen earlier to McNaughton, ousted Chance Chin 9-6 and Ron Kingsley 9-4 before coming upon McNaughton once again. Just as before, it was McNaughton on top, and he advanced to the quarterfinals against Fawcett. A smooth 9-5 victory put him into the semifinals, but his opponent was in a hurry to get back to Souvanthong, and it was Hatch who earned the spot in the finals 9-6.

In the true double-elimination final match, Hatch would have to win two sets to reach his familiar place in the winner’s circle, but Souvanthong was having none of it. Though Hatch reached the hill first in their tight match, Souvanthong marked up the last two games to nab his first win of the season 9-8.

In Sunday’s $500-added second chance non-pro event, Willie Oney reached the finals undefeated, while Dan Kolacz, who moved west after the first round, took the long road. Kolacz nailed the first set 3-0, but the second set and the win went to Oney 3-2. The final winner of the weekend was Mike Patrowicz, whose ticket was drawn in the raffle for a Joss cue valued at $1,200.
