Grooms Cuts Down Michael’s Billiards
Great Southern Billiard Tour / Michael’s Billiards in Cincinnatti, OH
Mike Grooms outlasted a Great Southern Billiards Tour field of 44 players at Michael’s Billiards in Fairfield, OH on November 20-21, 2010. The event was a $1,500 added event that featured top billiard players from the midwest and southern states.
Play began on Friday night with a bank mini tournament with Louis D’Marco snaring the top honors. Play on Saturday featured 9-ball action including Joe Brown, Louis D’Marco, Tommy Stevenson, David Rice, David King and Jordan Grubb.
Saturday’s action also included a break contest which was captured by David King with a speed of 30.10 MPH. The contest was controlled using the Break Speed App created by Craig York and Paul Nettles.
The hot seat match featured Mike Grooms facing off against Jay Copeland with Mike racing to 9 and Jay racing to 7. The match see-sawed back and forth until Grooms pulled out a hill-hill-victory.
Copeland proceeded to the finals of the one-loss side with Joe “Smokin’ Joe” Pierce. Pierce, a serviceman with 18 years served, is a refreshing, exciting and energetic player that shoots straight and supply audiences with entertainment via his colorful and outgoing personality and the table-side antics including fist pumps and cheers that had the online crowd both loving and pulling for him throughout the event. Pierce quickly moved out to a lead in the match via shot-making and brash, aggressive attacks on the leaves that the more-experienced Copeland presented. Pierce edged out Copeland, 7-3.
In the finals, we saw the age old classic confrontation of experienced veteran versus the younger inexperienced player, that we love to watch unfold, between Grooms and Pierce. The match see-sawed with Grooms eventually capitalizing on a Pierce mistake at hill-hill to go onto victory.
