Yalin Women’s World 10-Ball Championship: The Final Four Big Guns
The enthusiatisc fans cheer for Jasmin Ouschan, one of the tournament favorites
It’s a pool fan’s dream final four as the big names in women’s billiards will be slugging it out today for the World Championship title. And with the two Asians facing off against each other and two Europeans the same, it will be a guaranteed East versus West finals. The Yalin Women’s World 10-Ball Championship is in its 5th and final day with all remainder matches at Robinson’s Galleria in Manila, Philippines.
Day 4 started with Taiwan’s Pei Chen Tsai coming in as the #1 seed in stage 2 of the event waiting for outcome of lower seeds Eun Ji Park and Zhou Shiming of China. Park squeezed out a 8-6 win and then proceeded to shock the pool world by taking down Tsai 8-6. This put Park in the quarter finals. A dream come through for the young 22 year old South Korean.
“I don’t have the same caliber of experience that the other players have, but my goal was to come here and get into the top 8. And I’ve done that now so I’m very happy”, said the shy, soft spoken Park.
In an all-Korean showdown, Ga Young Kim blew out Yu Ram Cha 8-3 in a highly anticpated match. The two ladies were in Manila only a month ago but as teammates. Kim then proceeded to smash Park 8-1 to advance to the semi-finals. This will be Kim’s 4th semi-finals appearance in a World Championship. She had already won two times in 9-Ball.
Karen Corr of Ireland looked good as she stopped Japan’s champion but then took a hard 8-2 loss from the overpowering Jasmin Ouschan. Corr would be left in 5th place this year, an improvement of her 9th place last year.
Kelly Fisher of England won easily over Germany’s Ina Jentschura and China’s last hope Jia Li. This would be Fisher’s first world championship win in pool if she pulls it off.
Rublien Amit is still on her dream run of successfully defending her title as she escaped from 6-7 behind when China’s Han Yu missed the 9-ball with the 10-ball hanging near to win the match. Amit followed up with a runout to win 8-7. Amit then proceeded to eliminate Norway’s Line Kjorsevik 8-2 to the delight of the hometown fans to enter her second consecutive semi-finals at the World 10-Ball.
One notable fact is that all the Chinese players and Taiwanese had been eliminated before the semi- finals. There were six chinese women and two Taiwanese. The experience of the Koreans, Filipina, and Europeans in 10-Ball seemed to be a definite advantage as 10-Ball is a more difficult game than 9-Ball.
Korea vs Philippines today with Kim vs Amit. Next will be Great Britain vs Austria with K. Fisher vs Ouschan. The finals are guaranteed to be Asia vs Europe.
