Virginia State 9-Ball Championships / Midlothian, VA

by InsidePOOL Staff

Brandon Shuff is looking to defend his title at this year’s Virginia State 9-Ball Champships and earn another free entry into this year’s U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships. Shuff is one of eight undefeated players and sixteen on the one-loss side left at the event who will return for Sunday’s matches.

Diamond Billiards in Midlothian, VA, is hosting the tournament, where included in the full 64-player field are 8 ladies, who are vying for their own entry into this year’s U.S. Open. Sherri Bruner and Angie Hawkins tied for the top-finishing lady and will face off against each other Sunday to see who will take the coveted spot.

Shuff has only given up seven games in the first three rounds of his event, defeating Todd Strickland 9-3, Robert Cord 9-1, and then Greg Ferguson 9-3. His next opponent will be Greg Taylor. Also looking strong is David Hunt, who bested Sam Coleman 9-0, Mike Harvey 9-4, and Kirk Densmore 9-4. Hunt’s next opponent will be Eric Moore.

Young gun Chris Futrell found himself breaking Moore, another past winner of this tournament, on the hill and came up empty. With an open table, Moore cleared to the 7 but came up short on a tricky cut. After pocketing the remaining three balls, Futrell made it hill-hill. He scratched on the break, though, and it looked as though things might be over, but Moore rattled the 5 ball in the corner. Futrell played safe, and Moore returned the favor. Futrell hit the 5, but an unfortunate bounce off the 8 ball put the 5 in front of the side pocket. It was a rough out, but Moore managed it 9-8.
