Seminole Pro Tour / Gem City Open / Marietta, GA

Winner of the Seminole Pro Tour’s last stop, which was held in Spring Hill, FL, last month, Donny Mills is looking to repeat at the stop this weekend. Hosted by Marietta Billiard Club in Marietta, GA, the Seminole Pro Tour / Gem City Open has winnowed its winners’ bracket to eight players, while the one-loss side is still fighting it out.

After two easy wins in the first couple of rounds over Eddie Little and Jeff Crawford, both 9-2, Mills went on to face regular tour player and occasional victor, Stevie Moore. In no time Mills reached a 5-0 lead and looked like he would sweep the match, but Moore fought back to knot the score at 5 apiece. From there Mills took two games for every one of Moore’s, with the final score at 9-7 Mills. Mills’ next challenge will come from Shane Van Boening, who bested James Roberts 9-1.

Hall of Famer Nick Varner was sent west 9-5 in the last winners’ side round by Adam Smith, who will go on to face Shaun “Get Some” Wilkie, just off a hill-hill thriller with Paul Song, in the next round. Mike Dechaine survived another hill-hill battle with Rod Rentz and next plays Johnny Archer, who earlier defeated John Brumback 9-2. James Baraks dealt Tommy Kennedy his first loss 9-4 and next plays Charlie Williams, who sent Sylver Ochoa to the one-loss side 9-4.

Of the four women who entered, two are still alive. Allison Fisher suffered a second-round loss to Williams 9-3 and next plays fellow countryperson Tony Crosby, while Helena Thornfeldt was sent to the one-loss side by Moore in the second round 9-2. Kelly Fisher lost her first match to Rod Rentz 9-6 and her second to Mark Ritter 9-8, while Amy Chen lost her first match to Ochoa 9-2, defeated Bill DeLisle 9-1, and then lost to Felipe Flores 9-8.

Rodney Morris also had a tough event this weekend. John Visotsky overcame him in the first round 9-8, and then “Iron Mike” Davis finished the job in the second round 9-7. Davis then eliminated Mark Gregory 9-3 and will next play Corey Deuel, who was defeated earlier by James Roberts 9-7. Also still alive on the one-loss side are Manny Chau, Cliff Joyner, and Dave Grossman.
