Dechaine Douses Joss Competition
Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour / Providence, RI
by Lea Andrews
Mike Dechaine allowed Nelson Oliveira to get close to victory once in the June 12-13 stop of the Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour, but when the two met again in the finals, Dechaine earned his undefeated victory decisively. The two were among the field of 52 players who gathered at Snooker’s Billiards in Providence, RI, for the $1,500-added main event.
Dechaine rode a smooth 9-3 victory over Jarrod Clowery into the hot seat match, where he met Oliveira for the first time. Oliveira, who’d sent Dave Fernandez west 9-6, fought hard for the hot seat, trading games with Dechaine until it was hill-hill, but Dechaine marked up the final rack, and Oliveira moved over to the semifinals.
On the left side of the bracket, Ron Costanzio ousted Jason Michas 9-7 and Ray McNamara 9-7, but when he met up with Fernandez, he managed only five games, landing in fifth and sending Fernandez on to the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Kevin Guimond took care of Billy Lanna 9-5 and Ed Abraham 9-6, but a shutout blow from Clowery planted him in fifth, as well, while Clowery advanced to the quarterfinals against Fernandez, who was looking to get another crack at Oliveira. Fernandez earned his rematch 9-7, but it turned out to be a replay of their earlier meeting. Once again, Oliveira emerged the 9-6 victor, giving him his own rematch against Dechaine.
In the true double-elimination final match, unlike in the hot seat match, Dechaine gave himself plenty of breathing room. Getting out to a comfortable lead and staying there, Dechaine kept the possibility of a second set well at bay and clinched his victory 9-4.
Another victor on Sunday was Herb Lehman, who topped the $500-added second chance event that was open to any non-pro knocked out of the main event on Saturday. Lehman earned $320 for his 3-1 victory in the finals over Phil Davis, who pocketed $220. Chris Harris and Liz Taylor took home $140 and $100 for third and fourth, respectively, while Paul Laverdiere and Antero Tavares each left with $50 for fifth. Results:
