Ussery Takes Third Jacoby Title in a Row
Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour / Fuquay Varina, NC
BJ Ussery won his third Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour event in a row the weekend of June 5-6, besting Keith Bennett in the finals. The $1,000-added event was hosted by On The Snap Billiards in Fuquay Varina, NC, and attracted eight of the South’s finest players.
Ussery made his way to the finals after a late loss to Bennett in the winners’ side final four 7-4. After that victory, Bennett went on to the hot seat to meet Earl Strickland, who had just bested Chris Turner 7-4. Bennett was on par in this match and was able to send the Hall of Famer to the west side with a 7-3 win.
Husband and wife Bill and Jacki Dudgan tied for seventh place after being eliminated Arnold Hamlet 7-5 and Chris Vollmer 7-3, respectively. Hamlet went home in fifth place after being defeated by Turner 7-5, while Ussery took care of Vollmer 7-1. A determined Ussery went on to face Turner in the quarterfinals, and another 7-1 victory put Ussery one step closer to the finals.
An epic hill-hill battle with Strickland saw Ussery eke out a 7-6 win to reach Bennett again. In the extended race-to-11 finals, the players traded games at the beginning, but soon Ussery was holding a 7-3 and then a 10-4 lead. Bennett rallied to make it closer at 10-7, but a 1-9 combination in the final rack was all Ussery needed to take his third tour title in a row.In the early bird tournament, Craig Wolfe took home top honors, while Jacki Dudgan took the ladies’ title. David Haire won the juniors’ event, and Chris Turner took home the second chance event. In the $600 limited-edition Jacoby custom cue raffle, Eric Fair was the winner.
