Ussery Upsets Kennedy at Jacoby Tour
Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour / Rocky Mount, NC
Sharks-N-Shooters in Rocky Mount, NC, was the place to be May 15-16, as the Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour rolled into town. Twenty players showed up to the $1,000-added 9-ball event, and B.J. Ussery walked away with first place over Tommy “TK” Kennedy in the finals.
Ussery made it to the final four on the winners’ side with few problems, and he dispatched Sam Monday 7-5 to the one-loss side to reach the hot seat match. Meeting him there was former U.S. Open champion Kennedy, who had just defeated Michael Fuller 7-2. The hot seat match was closely contested, but Kennedy prevailed 7-5 to send Ussery to the west side of the chart.
On the one-loss side, Monday and Fuller rebounded. Monday delivered a 7-1 drubbing to Steven Page, while Fuller decisively defeated Glenn Russell, who had just ousted Shawn Putnam 7-2 in the previous round, 7-3. In the ensuing quarterfinal match, Fuller whitewashed Monday 7-0, sending him home in fourth place.
But the tables were turned on Fuller in the next round, as an eager Ussery dealt him a 7-0 donut to advance to the finals. Against Kennedy, Ussery won the lag and made a ball on the break but scratched while pocketing the 1 ball. Kennedy ran out to take a 1-0 lead, but it was his last of the evening. Ussery took complete control of the match to go up 4-1 and then 7-2. At that point Kennedy put two more racks under his belt to bring the score to 7-4, but from there it was all Ussery, as he won the next four games in a row to win the title 11-4.
In the early bird tournament, which was a pro-am scotch doubles teams event, “Texan Steakhouse” captained by BJ Ussery with teammate Chris Turner bested “A & J Golf Carts” consisting of Tommy Kennedy and Paul and Dylan Letchworth. Dylan Letchworth also was the winner of the juniors’ event, while Carly Pitt won the ladies’ division. In the second chance event, the final match saw Ron Parks go up against Glenn Russell, with Parks prevailing 7-3 to take top honors. Park won $110 for first, and Russell took home $60 for second place. Third place paid $30 to Ken Kendricks. The winner of the $600 Jacoby raffle cue was Lynn Aycock. Results:
