Stanton Steams Through Field for First
Great Southern Billiard Tour / Greensboro, NC
Adam Stanton fought his way through the one-loss side to take first place at the Great Southern Billiard Tour’s May 15-16 stop, double-dipping Thomas Sansone in the final match. Forty players vied for top honors at the $1,500-added stop, which was hosted by Gate City Billiards in Greensboro, NC.
Sansone was one of the final four players remaining on the winners’ side, and he matched up with Dennis Crist. After eking out a hill-hill win, he advanced to the hot seat match. Meeting him there was JR Post, who was fresh off a double-hill victory over Brian Simpson. Sansone dispatched Post to the west side with a 7-4 score and waited in the hot seat for a finals opponent.
On the one-loss side, Wayne Briles eliminated Rocky Hawk 7-3 to advance to meet Crist, with whom he went hill-hill before sending him home in fifth place. At the same time, Stanton was making his move, having dispatched TJ Moore 9-3 and then Simpson by the same score. Stanton went on to face Briles in the quarterfinal match, where he ousted his opponent with a strong 9-3 victory.
Now going full steam ahead, Stanton took Post to hill-hill before sidestepping him 9-7 to advance to the finals against Sansone. Stanton easily won the first set of the true double-elimination match 9-0, but Sansone put up a fight in the second. But Stanton had not come so far to go home with second place—he walked away the victor after yet another hill-hill match went his way.
