Mika “Iceman” Immonen came back from a huge deficit in the finals of the Mezz Pro-Am Tour’s April 18 stop to take first place over Gregg McAndrews, winning $975. The tour’s seventh event of the season was hosted by Skyline Billiards in Brooklyn, NY, and drew a total of 30 players.
Along with Immonen, the event drew a number of up-and-coming New York players, along with several other notable players such as Tony “The Silent Assassin” Robles, Rob Pole, Daniel “Smitty” Smith, Mike “Fingers” Badsteubner, Mike Miller, Jorge Rodriguez, and WPBA pros Caroline Pao and Jennifer Barretta.
Tough performances were seen from a number of players at this event, including Skyline house player Sammy Wu, who went through the winners’ bracket in impressive fashion, notching wins over Mike Wong 7-4, Juan Peralta 7-3, Oscar Bonilla 7-2, and Immonen 7-5. In the hot seat match, Wu lost a tough hill-hill battle to McAndrews 7-6.
McAndrews had a breakthrough performance at this event, with impressive wins over Paul Bramwell 7-4, Robles 7-6, Jorge Rodriguez 7-3, and Wu 7-6 to earn a spot in finals. Meeting him there was Immonen, who scored victories over Jerry Tarantola 7-2, Michael Yednak 7-5, and Daniel Smith 7-1 before his loss to Wu. On the one-loss side, Immonen eliminated Dan Smith 7-4 and avenged his loss to Wu 7-5, earning a spot in the finals.
In the finals match, McAndrews was up 4-0 in a blink of an eye. When Immonen was down 1-0, he bobbled the 7 in the side pocket. McAndrews capitalized to extend his lead to 4-0. Immonen broke and ran the next rack, but McAndrews countered to take the next 5-1. But from that point it was all Immonen, as he won eight more racks to McAndrews’ two to win the match 9-7.Results:
