Another Jacoby Billiards Victory for Ussery
Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour / Fuquay-Varina, NC

B.J. Ussery, who last won a Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour event in January, made a strong move through the one-loss side at the April 17-18 event to regain his spot on top. Ussery’s victory came at the expense of the strong field that gathered at On The Snap Billiards in Fuquay-Varina, NC, for the $1,000-added event.

Ussery suffered an early 7-3 loss to Keith Bennett, who went on to reach the winners’ side final four. There Bennett faced Johnny Griffin, who dealt him a 7-5 blow to arrive in the hot seat match against Arnold Hamlet, who’d sent Peaches Fuller west 7-3. Hamlet went west himself, though, after Griffin earned the spot in the finals 7-5.

On the left side of the bracket, Michael “Bulldawg” Fuller blew through Chris Rhoades 7-1 and Delton Howard 7-1 to face Bennett, whom he ousted 7-5 to reach the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Ussery got past Michael Dearing 7-4 and Chris Turner 7-1 to meet up with P. Fuller, who missed a faceoff with his son in the quarterfinals by two games, landing in fifth 7-5. Ussery, who’d fallen to “Bulldawg” 11-4 in the finals of an event in March, had exacted 7-3 revenge early in this event, and he got more vengeance in the quarterfinals, planting Fuller in fourth 7-2. One more obstacle stood in his way, but after taking care of Hamlet 7-3, he found himself in the finals once again.

In the single race-to-11 match, Griffin and Ussery traded games until Ussery led 4-3. Three games in a row put him well ahead at 7-3, but Griffin fought back, notching five games straight to take the lead for the first time at 8-7. But the rest of the 9 balls were Ussery’s, and he earned his victory 11-8.

Friday’s early bird event drew 13 players, and Keith Bennett walked away with the top prize of $140 after his decisive 7-1 victory in the finals over Chris Vollmar, whom he’d also taken care of in the hot seat match 5-2. Vollmar received $80, and Craig Wolfe received $40 for third. In Sunday’s second chance event, Michael Yingling pocketed $100 for his 7-6 victory over Vollmar, who took home $60. Pam Bartholomew topped the ladies’ division, while Jordan Douglas topped the juniors’. Vollmar earned another $50 when he won the break contest, but the break and run purse went unclaimed once again, pushing the pot to $87 per ball for the next event. The final winner of the weekend was Lynn Aycock, who found himself the owner of a $600 Jacoby cue when his ticket was drawn in the raffle.

Results:
1st B.J. Ussery $1,000
2nd Johnny Griffin $425
3rd Arnold Hamlet $200
4th Michael Fuller $75
