In day 3 of the Galveston World Classic, Efren Reyes plowed through Earl “the Pearl” Strickland in one of the many $5,000 challenge matches set for this event. Efren arrived at the match with only a few minutes to spare and was noticeably uncomfortable with the table in the early stages of the match. Once he found his grove, he pulled away for a 15-11 victory over the always entertaining, Earl Strickland.
The one-pocket event is winding down and only 3 remain on the winners’ side. Still undefeated, Efren Reyes will face Jeffery Heath tomorrow while Shannon Daulton sent Brandon Shuff to the 1-loss side in a late evening match. Plenty of strong contenders still remain on the one-loss side including the 2008 Derby City Classic One-Pocket Champion, Gabe Owen who eliminated the reigning DCC One-Pocket Champ, John Schmidt. Ike Runnels, Sylver Ochoa, Corey Deuel, Warren Kiamco, Larry Nevel, Cliff Joyner and John Macias are all still fighting for their chance in the finals and the $40,000 prize fund.
The field in the Women’s Pro 9-ball event is down to 6 players with only WPBA players remaining and many top ranked pro’s already eliminated. Yu Ram Cha suffered a disappointing loss to Allison Fisher in Day 2 but came back strong with wins over Iris Ranola, Gerda Hoffstatter and Monica Webb. She will face Miyuki Sakai in Day 4 while Kim White will play Vivian Villarreal for the 5th/6th place matches. On the winners’ side, Line Kjorsvik took down Vivian Villarreal to earn her way to the winners’ bracket finals where she will play the always strong, Allison Fisher.
The father and son duo, James Davis Sr. “Bastrop” and James Davis Jr. met each other in early rounds today. After defeating his son, “Bastrop” went on to defeat several more opponents to earn his way into the final 8 of the winners’ bracket. Many Texas boys still remain in the field including Sean Black, hometown Houston boy, Dennis Strickland, David Henson, Shane Manaole and James Davis Jr.
To date, the Philippino players have dominated the $5000 challenge matches and only time will tell if this pattern continues. Monday’s match is a highly anticipated event with USA’s top player, Shane Van Boening vs. Dennis Orcollo of the Philippines. Orcollo’s friend and Shane’s known rival, Alex Pagulayan noted “Dennis is playing better than anyone in the world right now” so this match promises to be a thriller.
