New England Women’s 9-Ball Tour / East Wareham, MA
by Lea Andrews
Although Liz Taylor found herself in an unfamiliar place at the third stop of the New England Women’s 9-Ball Tour – the left side of the bracket – she ended the day where she has at each stop so far: first place. Taylor was among the field of 17 ladies who gathered July 26 at The Fan Club in East Wareham, MA.
Taylor’s loss came in the second round courtesy of Bonnie Saritelli, so she was conspicuously absent from the winners’ side final four, where WPBA player Candi Rego pushed aside Linda Morton 7-5, and Janet Tycks did the same to Norma Corneau by a strong 7-1 margin. Tycks’ victory put her somewhere she’d never been on this tour, the hot seat match, but Rego didn’t let her take the hot seat itself, sending her left 7-3.
On the one-loss side, Taylor made her way through Debra Nicoll 7-5, Nicole Netherland 7-1, and Corneau 7-1 before coming upon heavy-hitter Stacie Borbeau, who was coming off wins over Saritelli 7-2, Wendy Snow 7-3, and Morton 7-2. Although Borbeau came close to taking down Taylor, she couldn’t quite get there, and Taylor moved on 7-6 to face Tycks.
It was Tycks’ first time in the one-loss semifinals, as well, so Taylor’s 7-3 win gave Tycks her highest finish on the tour to date, and put Taylor into the finals yet again.
The modified single race would end if Rego reached seven games first, but would extend to a race to nine if Taylor got there first. And get there she did, taking first with a decisive 9-3 win.
