Roberts and Rice on Collision Course in Greenville
by Joshua Johnson, Inside POOL
After Saturday’ play ended at World Cup Billiards in Greenville, SC, in the latest edition of the Great Southern Billiard Tour amateur events, only 12 players survived through a rough first day. Still undefeated is Josh Roberts, the sole AA-rated player in the tournament, A-rated David Rice, and B-rated players John Thompson and Tony Williams. Favorites Sidney Champion and Matt Mancini are still alive on the one-loss side, as is Landon Shuffett.
Shuffett, an A-ranked player going to 9 games, was knocked to the left side of the brackets in his set against Chris Zayas, a B player going to 7, which went double-hill. Shuffett had fought back on two separate occasions, from 0-4 down and then from 6-5 down to knot the score at 6-8. Zayas, who had won the lag, made the 9 ball on the break in the last rack to send the young prodigy over to the other side of the tournament bracket. Zayas went on to play another A player, Rice, in his next match. However, he was not able to overcome Rice, moving to the left side by a score of 9-3.
