Toney Tops Tri-State Billiard Field

Tri-State Tour / Queens, NY

by Skip Maloney

Duane Toney held off a strong bid from the one-loss side by Dianna “Snooky” Rojas to capture first place in the Tri-State Tour stop April 4. The $500-added, B-D handicapped event drew 32 entrants to Master Billiards in Sunnyside, Queens, NY.

Toney was among the winners’ side final four and got into the hot seat match with a 6-3 victory over Wilfred Albay. Alberto Estevez, in the meantime, survived a hill-hill battle against Arturo Reyes to join Toney. Toney was in command from the start of the hot seat match that followed and defeated Estevez 7-1 to wait for Rojas.

Rojas, in the meantime, was busy from among the event’s final 12, defeating Raphael DaBreo in a double-hill contest and Juan Guzman 8-6 for the right to meet Albay, who she then defeated 6-4 to move into the quarterfinals. Dave Jadus, in the meantime, was carving out his own path to the quarterfinals, moving past Brian Hunter, Ron Mason and Reyes in three hill-hill struggles. Rojas dropped Jadus into fourth place 8-6 and squeaked by Estevez in the semifinals 8-7.

Had Rojas reached 6 racks before Toney, the finals would have extended to eight games. Toney, though, made that point moot, defeating Rojas 6-2 to capture the first-place prize.
