Owen Defeats Davis in Seminole Pro Tour Opener
Seminole Pro Tour / Atlanta, GA
by Skip Maloney
Gabe “The Babe” Owen came back from the one-loss side to meet and defeat Mike Davis in the finals of the Seminole Pro Tour’s season opener the weekend of April 3-5. In this, the second year in which the Seminole Pro Tour has expanded beyond its original Floridian borders, the tour opened up in Atlanta, GA, with a $3,000-added event, drawing 33 entrants, including a top-notch list of competitors like Steve Moore, Corey Deuel, Ronnie Wiseman, Earl Strickland, and John Schmidt.
Three of those names were among the winners’ side final four. Owen and Schmidt battled for the right to get into the hot seat match, as did Davis and Mitch Yarborough. Schmidt sent Owen west 8-6 as Davis got by Yarborough 8-5. In a tightly contested, hill-hill battle for the hot seat, Davis prevailed and waited for Owen to come back from his three-match visit to the one-loss side.
On the one-loss side, from among the event’s final 12, it was Strickland and Ignacio Chavez, who were waiting for Owen and Yarborough. Strickland had won a double-hill battle that dropped Deuel into the tie for ninth place and then defeated Paul Song 8-5 to meet Owen. Chavez, in the meantime, had gotten by Moore in a hill-hill battle and dropped Wiseman into the tie for seventh place with an 8-6 win that set him up versus Yarborough. It was Owen, defeating Strickland 8-3, and Yarborough, downing Chavez 8-6, who advanced to the quarterfinals. Owen turned in a commanding 8-1 victory over Yarborough that sent him to the semifinals for his second match versus Schmidt.
The score in the second Owen/Schmidt battle was the same as the first – 8-6 – but it was Owen advancing to the race-to-9 finals versus Davis. In those finals, the two traded racks to a 6-6 tie, before Owen surged to the hill with two straight wins. Davis came back to win the next game, but in the final rack, Owen jumped on an open shot at the 7 ball and finished it at 9-7.
