Two in a Row for Gutierrez
Fast Eddie’s Olhausen 9-Ball Tour / Lubbock, TX
by Skip Maloney
David Gutierrez is the only player in the history of Fast Eddie’s Olhausen 9-Ball Tour to win three events in a row, and on the weekend of April 18-19, he put himself in position to do it again time by winning his second straight victory on this year’s tour. He completed a second straight undefeated weekend by besting Jui Lung Chen in the $1,750-added event, which drew 60 entrants to Fast Eddie’s in Lubbock, TX.
From among the winners’ side final four, Gutierrez began with a 9-6 victory over Nick Tafoya, as Jui Lung Chen was sending Jay Thurman west 9-5. In the hot seat match that followed, Gutierrez sent Chen to the semifinals 9-6 and waited for his return.
Thurman’s move to the one-loss side set him up versus Robert Newkirk, while Tafoya met Tommy Tokopah. It was Newkirk and Tafoya advancing to the quarterfinals with identical 7-5 wins over Thurman and Tokopah. Tafoya dropped Newkirk into fourth place to meet Chen in the semifinals.
Tafoya and Chen battled to hill-hill before Chen prevailed for his second chance at Gutierrez. Chen, with a degree of momentum on his side, jumped out to an early and commanding 6-1 lead in the finals before Gutierrez responded with six straight racks to surge ahead to 7-6. Chen fought back to tie it at 7, but the final two and a second straight Fast Eddie’s victory went to Gutierrez.
