Cintron Rips Through Rojas for Tri-State Win
Tri State Tour / Edison, NJ
by Skip Maloney
Danny Cintron, one of only a handful of players to win the Tri-State Tour multiple times, picked up his fifth victory since last April. He completed an undefeated event April 19 with a finals victory over Alexander Rojas in the $500-added, A-D handicapped event, which drew 30 entrants to Sandcastle Billiards in Edison, NJ.
Cintron opened his final three-match journey to the tour victory with a 7-4 win over Rajeesh Vannala, which put him into the hot seat match and his first confrontation versus Rojas. Rojas had sent George Osipovich west in a hill-hill win and then followed him there when Cintron gained the hot seat 7-5.
Gary Murgia and Ryan McCarthy were waiting for Vannala and Osipovich on the one-loss side. Osipovich squeaked into the quarterfinal match with a hill-hill win over Murgia, as Vannala defeated McCarthy 7-5 to join him. Osipovich dropped into fourth place when he shot at the 9 ball, hanging in a pocket in the last game of a hill-hill match and missed it completely.
Vannala advanced to the semifinals versus Rojas, who dropped him into third place and got his second chance at Cintron. Rojas stayed ahead by two games and .extended it to three by the time he reached 7 wins, forcing an extension of the match to nine games. His seventh win, though, was his last, as Cintron fought back steadily to win the next five and complete his undefeated weekend.
