Wechsler Wins CNY Season Finale
Central New York 9-Ball Tour / North Syracuse, NY
Lyn Wechsler survived a strong bid by Dave Ricci to capture first place in the season finale of the CNY 9-Ball Tour the weekend of March 14-15. The $1,000-added, A-B handicapped event, which closed out the 8-stop tour, drew 40 entrants to Salt City Billiards in North Syracuse, NY.
Wechsler began his four-match trek to the winners’ circle with a strong 8-1 victory over Gary Chartowick. Ricci, in the meantime, had his hands full with Jared Zimmerman but advanced to the hot seat match with a 7-5 win. In the first of their three matches, Wechsler gained the hot seat with an 8-3 win that sent Ricci to the semifinals.
On the one-loss side, Dan Smith (AA+1) squeaked by Dave Grau (AA+3) in a hill-hill battle and then defeated Phil Simmons for the right to meet Zimmerman. In a pair of straight-up, A-handicap contests, it was Dwight Dixon, moving past Paul Enslin and Dominick Martoccia to meet Chartowick. Zimmerman got by Smith 7-5, as Dixon survived a hill-hill struggle to move past Chartowick. In the quarterfinals that followed, another straight-up race to 7 with two A players, Dixon won his second straight double-hill battle and moved into the semifinals versus Ricci.
With two straight hill-hill wins behind him, Dixon battled to a third straight only to drop into third place, advancing Ricci into a rematch versus Wechsler. Ricci, an A handicap, needed to get to 7, and in the opening set of the true double-elimination finals, he was ahead by 4 when he defeated Wechsler. In the second set, Wechsler, who, with an AA+1 handicap, had to get to 8 games before Ricci hit 7, took an early, though slim 2-0 lead. The two traded racks through the middle of the match, but Wechsler never relinquished the lead and closed it out at 8-5 to take top honors.
