Tri-State Tour / Edison, NJ
Christian Smith held off Tony Eglesias in the finals of the Tri-State Tour stop March 29, completing an undefeated run through a field of 32 entrants. The $500-added, B-D handicapped event was hosted by Sandcastle Billiards in Edison, NJ.
Before Smith could even reach the finals, he had to hold off a couple of contenders from among the winners’ side final four, including George Osipovich, who battled Smith to double-hill before heading west. Dave Jadus, in the meantime, sent Eglesias to the one-loss side 7-5, which put him in the hot seat match versus Smith. Smith struggled again but gained the hot seat 7-5 to await Eglesias’ return.
Ben Sadowski and James Giosofatto were waiting for Osipovich and Eglesias on the one-loss side; Sadowski having bested Kyle Bubet 7-5, as Giosofatto survived a hill-hill battle versus Jonathon Woo. Sadowski dropped Osipovich into the tie for fifth as Eglesias moved a step closer to the finals with a 7-5 win over Giosofatto. Eglesias then repeated that 7-5 score in a quarterfinal victory over Sadowski and faced his final hurdle for a rematch versus Smith.
Eglesias won the semifinals 7-3 over Jadus and got his chance. Had Eglesias reached seven wins first, the match would have been extended to nine games, but Smith made the point moot. He came out strong and took the finals 7-3 to bring home the first-place prize.
