Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour/ Fuquay Varina, NC
by Skip Maloney
Keith Bennett scorched the 19-player field of the March 8 Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour stop. Mike Davis, operating from the hot seat, gave Bennett a run for his winning money in those finals but fell a few racks short as Bennett took the first-place prize. The $1,000-added event was hosted by On The Snap Billiards in Fuquay Varina, NC.
Davis entered those finals on a bit of hot streak himself. He defeated Cary Dunn 7-1 and then sent Mark Boren to the semifinals by the same score to gain the hot seat. Boren had sent Johnny Griffin west to join Dunn.
On the one-loss side, Bennett defeated B.J. Ussery 7-1 and then had his toughest match of the final six, giving up five racks to Sidney Champion for the right to meet Griffin. Over the course of his next three matches, Bennett only gave up one rack. After shutting out both Griffin and then Dunn in the quarterfinals, he scored a 7-1 win over Boren in the semifinals.
Davis and Bennett fought back and forth to a 5-5 tie in the race-to-9 finals before Bennett took command. He won four of the next five games and took top honors with a 9-6 win over Davis.
In a series of concurrent events held over the weekend, Davis took first place in Friday night’s 13-entrant early bird tournament, defeating Fred Greene in the finals. Shana Wyant took first place in the ladies’ event, which drew six entrants. Robert Ray took top honors in a five-entrant second chance tournament, besting Palmer Richardson in a hill-hill final. Richardson took first place in a three-entrant juniors’ tournament.
