by Skip Maloney
In an exciting, double-elimination final match versus Nick Hood, Lanny Herrin hung on to complete an undefeated weekend at the Bar Table Open II tournament in Houston, TX, March 28-29. The $1,000-added open event drew 60 competitors to the Rose Country Club in Houston, TX.
Herrin and Hood first locked horns in the hot seat match, after Herrin had sent Danny Tam west 9-6 and Hood had done likewise to Doug Young in a hill-hill contest. Herrin gained the hot seat with a 9-4 win over Hood and waited for him to return.
Over on the one-loss side, Charlie “Hillbilly” Bryant was working his way through the bracket for a match-up versus Tam. He got by Bobby Gonzales double-hill and Eric Olivo 7-1 to face Tam. Ernesto Bayaua survived two hill-hill struggles of his own for the right to meet Young. Tam dropped Bryant into the tie for fifth 7-5, as Young moved into the quarterfinals with a 7-4 victory over Bayaua. Tam got a step closer to making it back to the finals with a 7-3 win over Young, but fell to Hood in the semifinals 7-4.
In the opening set of the double-elimination finals that followed (first set to 9; second to 7), both Hood and Herrin made it clear that neither was going to go down easily. They battled back and forth to hill-hill before Hood forced a second set. Herrin broke and ran the first rack of the second set and sunk the 9 on the second rack. He followed that with a run out in the third rack that started with a 1-3 combination and it was 3-0. Hood fought back to tie it at 3-3 but would advance no further. Herrin took the seventh rack and sank 6 balls on the following break. An easy run-out followed and Herrin was ahead 5-3. Some safety play characterized the ninth rack, but Herrin prevailed again to reach the hill. He broke and ran the final rack to capture the first-place prize.
