Deuel Grabs Super Billiards Expo Hot Seat

Deuel Sits in Hot Seat, Three More Join Him Sunday

by InsidePOOL Staff

Corey Deuel won the hot seat in convincing form from Oscar Dominguez at the Diamond Open 10-Ball Professional Players Championship in the final round of the evening. He will attempt to reclaim his 2007 title Sunday, joined by John Schmidt, Charlie Bryant, and Dominguez.

In the earlier winners’ side round, Deuel fended off a strong challenge from Schmidt, sending him to the west side 10-7 and advancing to the hot seat match. In the other winners’ side match that round, Dominguez dealt Bryant his first loss 10-4.

Deuel, who is famous for having mastered the soft break in 9-ball, seems to have added the 10-ball break to his arsenal as well. He charged Dominguez for every error he made, and it wasn’t long before the score reached 9-3 in his favor. Dominguez made a play for a comeback and put another few racks under his belt, but when Dominguez left Deuel a thin slice on the 1 ball in the final rack, Deuel pocketed it and cleared the rest of the table for the 10-6 win.

Thorsten Hohmann lost his first-round match against Darren Appleton 10-7 and fought a long battle through the one-loss side to reach Saturday evening’s matches. He met his comeuppance in Bryant tonight, though, as Bryant held control of the match the entire time, finally sending Hohmann home in fifth place 10-4.

Joining Hohmann in a tie for fifth place was fellow German Ralf Souquet. After his loss to Dominguez 10-8, he defeated Al Lapena 10-2 before meeting Schmidt. Schmidt was on fire in this match and never really gave Souquet too many chances before notching a 10-5 victory.

Schmidt will play Bryant Sunday at 11 a.m. in the quarterfinals, and then the winner will advance to the semifinals to play Dominguez. The winner of that match will play Deuel in the finals for the grand prize of $20,000.
