Day two of the U.S. Bar Table 10-Ball Championships is still underway, and the tournament will be down to the final four by the end of Tuesday’s matches. Semifinal and final matches will continue Wednesday as the 9-ball division begins.
Always a contender, Michigan’s Jason “The Dark Horse” Kirkwood forfeited an early one-loss side round this morning as he misread the brackets and showed up two hours late for his match.
Last year’s 10-ball champion, Shane Van Boening, has secured his spot in the top six, still on the winners’ side, with a 7-3 wins over Brandon Shuff and Steve Moore. Moore missed a routine 9 ball to go up 4-1 in the set. Van Boening missed the same 9 ball, but it found a pocket three rails later with shape on the 10 ball to bring the score to 3-2.
Adam Behnke continues his reign on the winners’ with a 7-2 win over Warren “The Monk” Constanza and a hill-hill thriller over Larry Wilson. Wilson played a safe on the 6 ball in the case game. Behnke jump-banked the 6 ball into the side pocket with shape on the 7-10 combination.
Reigning world 10-ball champ Darren “Dynamite” Appleton will face Van Boening in the next round, earning his stop in the top four of the winners’ side with a comeback win over Stan Tourangeau. After being down 4-0, Appleton fought back to a 7-5 win.
Fighting for the fourth remaining spot on the winners’ side are Glen Atwell and Jose Parica. The last remaining lady, Angelina Paglia, was eliminated one round out of the money by Nick Kruger, who later fell 7-2 to Brandon Shuff. The one-loss side is full of dangerous contenders, as Mark Tadd, Tyler Edey, Rafael Martinez, Johnathan Pinegar, and Randy Vaughn are still alive.
Scott “The Freezer” Frost, who is always a force at this tournament, was unfortunately unable to attend because of complications from a black widow spider bite that occurred last week. After failed antibiotic treatment, Frost suffered a seizure yesterday evening. He remains in the hospital under a 72-hour observation.
