Great Southern Billiard Tour / Chattanooga, TN
by Skip Maloney
Amidst a strong field of 60 entrants who took to the tables in Chattanooga the weekend of February 7-8 for the $10,000 total purse at stake in the Great Southern Billiard Tour’s championship event, Gabe Owen emerged to capture the first-place, $3,000 prize.
The two matches among the winners’ side final four–Owen versus Billy Young and Larry Nevel against Steve Moore–turned out to be the only hill-hill battles among the tournament’s final 12 players. Owen and Nevel won them both and then squared off in the hot seat match against each other. Owen prevailed 11-8 and the hot seat was his.
On the one-loss side, Jonathan “Hennessee” Pinegar dropped Shane Van Boening into the tie for thirteenth place with an 11-5 victory, following it with an 11-3 win over Sparky Ferrell and then taking out Jesse Middlebrook 11-6 to meet Young. Middlebrook had previously eliminated Scott Lewis after Lewis’ victory over Johnny “The Scorpion” Archer. Randy Vaughn, on the heels of wins over club owner David Crockett and Stoney Stone, was waiting for Moore. Pinegar turned in a commanding 11-3 performance against Moore in the quarterfinals that followed and turned his attention to “The Truth.”
In a back and forth battle with a minimum prize difference of $750 at stake and potentially, $1,750, Nevel dropped Pinegar into third place 11-9 and turned back for a second crack at Owen. Nevel donated a few racks in the early going of the finals by scratching but stayed relatively close. At 10-6, however, Owen settled in to take the next five racks and close out the tour championship.
